Personal Reflection of Design Visualization

Throughout the semester I learned an enormous amount about drafting, drawing, and layout of compositions. At the start, I will have to admit, it was a bit overwhelming. I wasn't sure how I would do, but I kept motivating myself and telling myself to do my best and that I could do it. Lettering was a challenge and was very frustrating at times, but looking back I feel like it was a good starting point for this major and this course. It taught me how deal with pressure, stress, and to manage my time. I also learned that small details really do matter and are extremely important.

As moving along from project to project, there were a few that I think were successful. My favorite drawing was my selected object orthographics. For this project, we were allowed to pick any object from our room and were to construct top, front, and side view orthographics of it. I chose to draw a hair clip. I knew this object would be challenging and take extra time and effort, but I felt it was necessary to learn and improve as a drafting student. Multiple drawings were done until the final was made. Looking back at this project I feel a sense of achievement and pride in knowing that the time, effort, and struggles paid off.

Another project that I enjoyed learning about was perspectives. Learning perspectives and there detail was challenging, but it was worth it. I think I enjoy doing perspectives so much because it is actually looking at something that vanishes. Section cut out perspectives were my favorite because you can actually see inside of a space. I am looking forward to placing objects within the spaces and scale figures. We got to do a little of this with placing two boxes inside of a section perspective as well as a scale figure.

I am glad I was able to go through this class and feel that I am learning and improving in drafting. I think this class has prepared me for class next semester, next year, and the future in my career ahead.

Class Throwdown Showdown Drawing

For the last day of Design Visualization 1 we had a drawing competition. For the class, we were put in groups of six. We were to draw a group of people for 15 minutes. For this activity, I chose to draw using a contour method and focused on the outer shapes the people made. I chose to eliminate the chairs and the things that surrounded them so that the viewer could visualize the surrounding to what they wish it to be. Below is a picture of my favorite drawing of the two. I think I could have shown more detail in value and contrast in the people in my drawing, but am satisfied with the simple approach.

 

Here is a fun look at this drawing combined with my other drawing coming through. I like the way the people emerge and gives a "see through" look. It is like some of the people are invisible. 

Evaluation of Journals

Throughout the semester, I have practiced my drawing skills in a daily journal sketchbook. For a few weeks, I focus on a specific object or drawing technique and practice them. So far, I have had the opportunity to draw leaves, twigs, bottles of water (showing light), and am now getting the privilege to draw self portraits. Below are three sketches from my sketchbook showing one drawing from each of the first three objects.

 

This is the very first drawing I drew in my journal sketchbook. The location of this drawing was in the studio at my cubical. It was sitting in the window seal and the light reflecting inside the window cast a light shadow below the object. The details in the curves and shape of the object are strong, yet I feel that shading of the object and value could be improved.

This drawing of a twig was drawn in class during an in class activity. The twig was one of my classmates and was sitting on a cubical desk. I believe the shading and value of this object was well developed, but think the casting shadow on the table below could be strengthened.

 

 This is a drawing of an empty icecream cup filled with water. This was drawn at my apartment at my dining room table. The different values shown shows aesthetic quality, however, more details with the values and shadows could be improved and help the overall object.

After evaluating my individual journal sketchbook, I was asked to evaluate two of my classmates journals as well. Below is two drawings that I have found inspiration in and have learned from as well.

This is a drawing of a wood project my class had to design. Above is a drawing of the wood model Caitlyn made. I really find this drawing appealing because of the detail shown in the wood. One can see each little detail in every piece of wood. Also, the bottom piece of wood has a darker value to it which implies a shadow that the pieces of wood makes on it. I feel that by looking at this drawing I can improve the detail of my drawing and the shadows in them and encourages me to move away from my comfort zone and take a risk at drawing more.

This drawing is a twig that Beckie Yohn drew. I found this drawing appealing because of the shadow cast on the table the twig is sitting on. By drawing the shadow, the twig looks more dimensional. Also, the shadow has so much detail that one can gain more information about the twig from it. I think this is a strength of drawing and hope I can make my drawings show this amount of detail in shadow and dimensionality.

My strength of this project was design layout and spacing.  My weakness was the curve of the lines on the form.

Object Pictorial Views

The strength of this assignment was line weight and quality and the emphasis shown on scale of line. The weakness of this project was drawing the four point system circles well.

Hair Clip Orthographic Views

The strength of this project was challenging myself. It helped me focus on the minute details of an object. I also think a strength of this assignment was line quality and layout. A weakness of this project was making the hair clip completely accurate due to its challenges.

Lettering Assignment

Song: Love Like Crazy

I find inspiration in traveling and in magazines. But my real inspiration comes from everything I see around me. Traveling is just what helps me explore more unique things that are in our environment and allows me to become inspired through diversity. I like to take different things I see, mix them together in my head to create something completely different that is my own.
