This analysis of wood allowed me to become familiar with the wood shop and the tools accessible to me for future projects, like the luminare project. I enjoyed using the planer, band saw, table saw, drill press, and many other pieces of equipment. The abstract view of the final I find appealing and interesting.

Solar Temporality

What is a light phenomenon? Is it a sunset, light flickering through the trees, or the way the sun changes lighting throughout the day? For this project, one had to determine what a light phenomenon was. For me it was looking what the source of light; the sun. I took a little of a scientific approach, but I feel it is necessary because it will help me become a more knowledgeable interior architect. I have discovered that in looking at the scientific solar facts, like the angle of the sun in a given day and time, I will be able to know exactly how the light of the sun can affect a building or room I create. Below is the process of thinking that I took and the light phenomenon I found. I hope you enjoy!

Light Precedents- Dan Flavin

Light is something that defines space and makes the space. It is something that engages the human mind and gives meaning to things. According to Patricia C. Johnson of the Houston Chronicle, "Flavin's work (with light) paints the air and erases architecture." Perhaps some agree, but I have to disagree in that light is what adds elements and uniqueness to the architecture surrounding it. I challenge you to determine what you see Dan Flavin's work and light in general to represent and be in that or any surrounding.

Dan Flavin was an American Minimalist whos focus was on sculpural objects and flourescent light fixtures. He was educated at The New School for Social Research and Columbia University where he studied Art history, painting and drawing. He first incorporated electric light in his portfolio of art in 1961 by making it a new art form to "play" with and evolve.

His first work to incorporate this new art form of electric light was the "Icons" series. This was a series of eight colored square box forms.

His last piece of work was a site specific work at S. Maria Annunciata in Chiesa Rossa, Milan, Italy. It was completed only two days before his death at his studio.

Dan Flavin was a very unique artist. Though some compare to his art in the fact that they use light in art forms, like James Turrell, none will ever be exactly like him. Both artists do, however, compare in that they both use light in structural spaces. They differ in that Turrell uses light to engage and influence the viewers thoughts while Flavin uses light to enphasis the importance of light and what it has to bring.

Pictorial Views of Object

My strength of this project was design layout and spacing.  My weakness was the curve of the lines on the form.

Object Pictorial Views

The strength of this assignment was line weight and quality and the emphasis shown on scale of line. The weakness of this project was drawing the four point system circles well.

Hair Clip Orthographic Views

The strength of this project was challenging myself. It helped me focus on the minute details of an object. I also think a strength of this assignment was line quality and layout. A weakness of this project was making the hair clip completely accurate due to its challenges.
